First 5 LA grants $1 million to LA County Library Family Place Centers

A $1 million grant from First 5 LA, a child advocacy organization, is funding the County of Los Angeles Public Library and other public libraries in the community to develop 20 Family Place Centers.

Family Place is a center for early childhood information, parent education workshops, socialization and family support. The funding includes training of library staff, enhancements of a family welcoming space within the library, and expansion of the collection of books and materials for early childhood, parenting, and child care.  The funding will also support the creation of the California Family Place training center in Carson to support a California State Library initiative to expand Family Place statewide.

“We are grateful to First 5 LA for enabling the County Library to enhance Family Place Centers which builds on the knowledge that good health, early learning, parent involvement and supportive communities that play a critical role in young children’s growth and development,” stated Margaret Donnellan Todd, Los Angeles County Librarian.
