Redwood City Public Library’s Project READ, in collaboration with Cañada College, has received not only the San Mateo County School Boards Association’s J. Russell Kent Award, but also a Certificate of Recognition from the California Senate and a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives.
The library’s literacy program, funded in part by California Library Literacy Services, was singled out for its Inmate Peer Tutor Program, a project which enables inmates to earn college credits by successfully completing a specialized literacy program with Project READ volunteer tutors. By partnering with Cañada College, program tutors participate in Literacy Tutoring in the Community, another avenue for students to gain new skills to help improve the community through enhancing literacy.
