Matsui archive unveiled, California Civil Liberties Public Education Program provides major funding

The California State Library through the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program provided almost $60,000 in grant funding for a digital archive devoted to the late Congressman Robert T. Matsui at California State University Sacramento (CSUS).  The CSUS Matsui archive features video clips, photographs, speeches and more that demonstrate Matsui’s leadership in gaining redress and reparations for Japanese Americans interned during World War II.

The Matsui archive was unveiled February 19, the “Day of Remembrance” that marks the 65th anniversary of Executive Order No. 9066 which authorized the removal of 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry from West Coast states.

The California Civil Liberties Public Education Program (CCLPEP) provides competitive grants for public educational activities and the development of educational materials to ensure that the events surrounding the internment of civilians and permanent resident aliens of Japanese ancestry during World War II will be remembered and so that causes and circumstances of this and similar events may be illuminated and understood.
