I have been asked by my Library Director to ask if there are any restrictions on how the old Gates computers from the 2000 grant cycle are to be disposed of? Can they be used by another County department for public access internet? I looked through the original agreement and found no reference to disposal.
California State Library response:
Our understanding from staff at the Gates Foundation is that Gates computers from the 2000 grant cycle are not to be used for public access computing in the library, the PAC HUG program has provided replacements for them. Before donation or disposal of the computer the software must be removed since it was licensed only to the library. The operating system, however, may be retained. Infopeople hosts an information page about PAC HUG: http://www.infopeople.org/partners/gates/pac_hug.html. I would be happy to answer questions about the program. My email is ibray@library.ca.gov.
